Reportedly one of the last designs of James B. Longacre before his death in 1869, this gold pattern is classified as “ultra rare” with a reported mintage of only 4-10 pieces.
The head of Liberty on the obverse is similar to that on the regularly issued three cent nickel that was introduced in 1865. It features the head of Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse features an eagle holding three arrows and an olive branch. A ribbon above is inscribed with IN GOD WE TRUST.
Patterns are so rare that most collectors never own a single example; factor in the increased demand, this example represents a wonderful long term opportunity. POR
