1877 $50 Gilt Half Union, J-1547 NGC PF63, CAC Certified

* Ranked #13 in the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins book.
* This is the only collectible Gilt J-1547.
A monumental rarity, that was minted in 1877 to test the feasibility of a large denomination gold coin. The proposal came from California which only used coins at the time because paper money was illegal under the state constitution. There was a general demand from bankers and merchants for gold pieces of larger denominations.
A petition was sent to the Secretary of Treasury James Guthrie, requesting authorization of the $50 gold coins. The bill was later introduced and favored for striking the $50 gold "half union" and a $100 gold "union." Although the bill passed the senate, it did not pass the house.
Designed by William Barber, the obverse features a portrait of Lady Liberty facing left with a beaded border, her locks wavy and thick. Below Lady Liberty, a "B" for Barber and thirteen stars surrounding the head.
The reverse depicts an eagle with raised wings and a shield before its breast holding three arrows in the left talon and an olive branch with three leaves in the right. The beak holds a scroll with the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM.
